16.02 To a reporter for a leading UK newspaper…
we have ongoing licensing and copyright problems with Universal. every company they acquired with whom i have a prior relationship - Sony / BMG Publishing, Island and Sanctuary - has resulted in problems in each case, and copyright violations with the Island and Sanctuary takeovers. a takeover of EMI would, i fear, be as much a mess.
i'm not sure whether you have any familiarity with my professional problems since 1991 (6 years and 7 months of dispute with EG, Virgin Records and BMG Publishing 1991-97). the initial problems with EG stemmed from the partners' - SG Alder and Mark Fenwick of Fenwick stores - problems as Lloyds' Names. at the time, i used to read the FT for latest info on the state of the london insurance market. this and the links in it provide an overview of Endless Grief.
currently, UMG continue to put up KC material for downloads (digital rights were excluded from the Sanctuary contract they took over, a story in itself), this since 2006. and now they are also selling KC CDs. oh - they haven't paid royalties on the two Summers & Fripp albums for 19 years.
several hundred e-mails for over five years have failed to find a settlement.
the music industry proceeds in much the same way as business in the financial sector and NewsCorp. basically, it's the same approach: a large firm does what it wants, addresses the consequences via high-paid lawyers who block enquiries, and deny culpability for mistakes. in november 2007 i chose to abandon full-time and front-line work, mainly in order to deal with this.
